GSM founding date and brief history
GSM was officially founded on July 22, 2019 in Antananarivo, the capital city of Madagascar. Its founding has been an initiative of Dr. Ny Riavo G. Voarintsoa, who is an alumnus of the Department of Geology of the University of Antananarivo, Madagascar, and who pursued a doctoral study at the Department of Geology of the University of Georgia, USA.
Dr. Voarintsoa was dedicated to give back to her home country since she left Madagascar to become an exchange scholar at Williams College, Williamstown, Massachusetts and pursued her doctoral degree at the Department of Geology of the University of Georgia, both in USA. Being a recipient of the Schlumberger Foundation Faculty for the Future Fellowship since 2015 until the completion of her PhD in 2017 and being a member of several international geosciences association (e.g., GSA, AGU, EGU, IAS), Dr. Voarintsoa was inspired and dedicated to give back to her home country to train and mentor future young geoscientists in Madagascar, and indeed has founded the Geological Society of Madagascar, an association that will be used as a vessel to advance all fields of natural sciences related to geosciences in Madagascar.
There were several steps and procedures prior to reaching to that founding stage. A general assembly with fourteen participants (nine men and five women) took place on May 24, 2019. The aim of the assembly was to discuss the founding statutes of the Association along with its code of conduct and internal regulations. During the assembly, two votes were done: (1) voting of the board members of the association, and (2) voting on the membership fees and the monthly contributions based on the membership category. After the general assembly, several administrative steps were followed and completed in order to apply for the national approval of GSM as a non-profit association in Madagascar (one at Tsimbazaza for most of the document checking and verification, and one at Ambohidahy for the national application, both in Antananarivo).
In accordance to the article 5 of the ordonnance no. 60.133 of Oct-03-1960, the Ministry of Interior and Decentralization released the approval letter no. 1099/19-MID/SG/DGAT/DPID/ANT/ASS to acknowledge the existence of the Geological Society of Madagascar (GSM) as a non-profit organization.
GSM is legally registered at the “Institut National de la Statistique” (National Institute of Statistic) with a unique STAT ID number according to the Decree no. 59-10 PR of May 15 1959, and is listed in the national directory in Madagascar. GSM also has an official tax ID (Numéro d’Identification Fiscale) or NIF.
