Outreach Activity
Context of the project
Madagascar plays an important role in the field of geology, particularly by its geological and tectonic position relative to the Gondwana supercontinent. It preserves various geological formations and structural entities with a great diversity in mineral resources, offering it opportunities for several scientific studies and other economic interests. Recently, geology had been applied in multidisciplinary fields (resources, paleoclimatic and paleoenvironmental reconstruction, medical geology, etc.), suggesting that it is a very useful discipline which could benefit the society.
Despite the various resources that Madagascar has, the field of geoscience (Earth Science) is still less known and little appreciated. In addition, the application of geoscience in this island still is less known and limited to mining operations (examples, precious metals, minerals and gems, oil and coals). This lack of knowledge about the importance of the application of geoscience is among barriers for young generations to decide to pursue a higher education / career in geoscience. The observation of this fact prompted us to organize this outreach activity in order to inspire young high school students to choose an academic or professional path in geoscience after obtaining the baccalaureate.

Geo-Photo Contest 2020
Geo-Photo Contest 2020 is a photography competition around the theme “Showcasing the geo-beauty of Madagascar”
Motivation
Photography can be one tool that geologists and geoscientists use to capture important information in the field, that a notebook alone can’t do. Hence, GSM is inviting you to share a selection from your field inspiring photos with a chance to win “The Best GEO-PHOTO Award 2020” and “The GSM Photo of the Year” with some prizes, including the brand-new goodies of GSM.
Details will be updated in the next couple weeks, stay tuned!

Quiz-ntsika (June, 2020)
Quiz-ntsika is a quiz game dedicated to enhance participation of the general public to get involved in geoscience by being a part of a fun but thought-provoking activities. The difficulty level of each set of questions varies every week to maintain a fun game activity.
This month of June, every Friday and Saturday, GSM launched a new outreach activities to challenge our Facebook followers with a quiz game that we named "Quiz-ntsika".
Each Friday morning at 8:00 am MDG time, starting June 05th, 2020, a new set of questions has been posted on Facebook. Anyone can respond to the quiz, with a condition that participants clearly provide their full name with the answers (to ease the drawing afterwards). This weekly quiz ends the following Saturday at 8:00 pm MDG time from the launching day, so any answers become invalid when the time is passed.
Participants who respond correctly are shortlisted, and we used a random name picker to select the winner, the name of whom is announced the following Friday. Our winners proudly received a customized GSM mug.

GSM Foundation is very thankful to our Paypal donors, the donations from whom have helped us set up this special Award for the students in real need. The Award will be primarily targeted to GSM active members and who are in 'good standing'. This means a members who paid the membership fees and monthly contributions. |
GSM celebrating #EarthDay2020
This year, GSM is celebrating the 50-year anniversary of Earth Day (22 Avril 1970-22 Avril 2020) with friends all over the world.
What is Earth Day?
It is a special day dedicated for our Planet Earth 🌍 and the protection of its unique environment🏝. The history of this Earth Day celebration can be found here if you are interested to know more. What we did? Being a citizen of the world with an mission to advance stewardship of Earth, members and friends of the Geological Society of Madagascar were enthused to participate in this event by sharing a photo (taken during their field expedition) with a small but memorable message followed by the hashtag #GSM_EarthDay2020 |
on our Facebook page.
Our messages Some of the messages ecourage readers and followers of GSM to protect the environment and the Earth. Other messages explain the motivation of the members to choose the discipline geoscience to gain more knowledge about Earth Sciences in order to understand better Earth processes, and hence with better information to provide solutions to protect our own and only Planet Earth. We celebrated Earth Day for one week to offer plenty of times to our follower to read, enjoy, and digest the message. |
🌍 We are very grateful for the successfulness of this celebration, and looking forward to doing much better to our Planet. 🌍
