A new international relationship has been established between the Geological Society of Madagascar and the Delta Kappa Gamma Society International, Beta Sigma Chapter in Athens, Georgia, USA
On Saturday October 24, 2020 at 10:00 am EST, President and Founder of the Geological Society of Madagascar (GSM), Dr. Ny Riavo G. Voarintsoa was inducted into Delta Kappa Gamma Society International, Beta Sigma Chapter in Athens, Georgia, USA. The virtual induction, via Zoom, had fourteen β∑ chapter members present, including current president, Diane Lutz and Voary’s sponsor, Dr. Marta Patiño-Douce, immediate past president of B∑.
Prior to being inducted, two formal interview meetings, as stated in the chapter by-laws, were held via Zoom on August 1st and September 5th. Everyone was able to ask questions and get to know one another through this communication technology. |
Dr. Ny Riavo Voarintsoa (Voary) is an alumnus of the Department of Geology of the University of Georgia, where she was the lab coordinator of an Environmental Geology class in the fall of 2013 and 2014. This was an introductory geology class for non-geology majors, led by Dr. Marta Patiño-Douce (Marta). The professional relationship and friendship between Voary and Marta has continued. They’ve exchanged emails to check on each other. Early in February 2020, Voary organized a fundraising event on the GoFundMe platform to support an Outreach Activity by the Geological Society of Madagascar at a local high school, Lycée J.J. Rabearivelo in Antananarivo Madagascar. Voary mentored nine highly motivated GSM members to lead the outreach activity. While Voary and Marta exchanged emails, Marta invited Voary to investigate DKG. This was an excellent initiative from Marta. Voary is delighted to be in a society of world-wide women educators.

“I am very thankful and excited to be joining this community of women educators because I’d love to encourage many other girls and women to further their education and to offset other social pressures that might hinder them from being an achiever and example to other girls and women. I hope that joining this community will provide opportunities to facilitate more girls and women to continue their education” says Voary.

Delta Kappa Gamma International Society was founded on May 11, 1929 for key women educators, and The Beta Sigma Chapter, encompassing Clarke and Oconee counties of the state of Georgia, in U.S.A, was founded in May 3, 1975. The mission of DKG International Society is to promote professional and personal growth of women educators and excellence in education. It has seven purposes, which are:
- To unite women educators of the world in a genuine spiritual fellowship
- To honor women who have given or who evidence a potential for distinctive service in any field of education
- To advance the professional interest and position of women in education
- To initiate, endorse, and support desirable legislation or other suitable endeavors in the interests of education and of women educators
- To endow scholarships to aid outstanding women educators in pursuing graduate study and to grant fellowships to non-member women educators
- To stimulate the personal and professional growth of members and to encourage their participation in appropriate programs of action
- To inform the members of current economic, social, political, and educational issues so that they may participate effectively in a world society
Voary’s induction into the Beta Sigma Chapter of the DKG International Society aligns with the second, third, and sixth purposes.
